Lot Details
Thomas F. Dinesen (Danish, 1872-1979) Untitled (Karen Blixen with her friend Erik von Otter; and Untitled (Farah with his son Saufe and Saufe's little brother), c. 1921-1925 (two works) 2 gelatin silver prints, one toned, printed c. 1921-1925. 3-1/4 x 5 inches (8.3 x 12.7 cm); and 3-3/4 x 3-1/2 inches (9.5 x 8.9 cm) PROVENANCE: Gift of the Artist. These two works show Karen Blixen's daily life in Kenya through the lens of her brother's Thomas Dinesen's camera. An exhibition devoted to this subject, Tales of Africa, Karen Blixen's life in Kenya, took place at Messums London in May-June 2021, featuring these two images and many of those, also by Dinesen, offered elsewhere in this sale. Dinesen was recipient of both the Victoria Cross and the French Croix de Guerre, the highest awards for gallantry in the face of the enemy action during the first World War. In 1918, he moved to Kenya to manage his sister Karen Blixen's coffee farm in the Ngong Hills, southwest of Nairobi. Dinesen's two vintage prints are accompanied by two works from the same period (a landscape and landscape with indistinct animals) that cannot conclusively be attributed to him. A portion of the proceeds from this Auction will be donated to Aprile's Memorial French Bulldogs Special Needs Support Services. Aprile's Memorial French Bulldogs Special Needs Support Services, Inc. is organized exclusively for charitable purposes within the meaning of section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code and the New York Not-for-Profit Corporation Law. EIN: 99-1580540 This charity is devoted to the prevention of Special Needs and Handicapped Dogs, with a special focus on French Bulldogs from being abandoned, surrendered to shelters and rescues and from being euthanized because of their vulnerabilities. Through the charity's Stop And Think Educational Outreach Program and its Support Services Program they are improving upon the quality of life of dogs with special needs, providing support to the people who care for them and saving them from being euthanized. Aprile's Memorial French Bulldogs Special Needs Support Services is named after Audra Allen's sister, Aprile, who passed away unexpectedly. Throughout her lifetime, Aprile was actively involved in animal rescue. HID12401132022 © 2024 Heritage Auctions | All Rights Reserved
