Lot Details
Watercolor over black chalks. With the estate stamp of the Kunstmuseum Basel (Lugt 1570 b) and the handwritten registration number “A Da / Aa 112” on the reverse. On firm, smooth Sihl Superbus wove paper (with the blindstamp). 51.1 x 35.6 cm. , the full sheet. [CH].

• Atmospheric depiction of the Swiss mountain panorama, typical of Kirchner's watercolors, paintings, and prints made after he had moved to Davos in 1918.
• With large, flat forms and strong diagonal lines, Kirchner created a wide open landscape.
• Sophisticated composition: a symbiosis of color fields and details, as well as a tripartite division of the pictorial space into sky, house and landscape.
• Around 1920/25, Kirchner often painted in Frauenkirch, not far from Lake Davos. He also created the painting “Lake Zurich” (Kunsthaus Zürich, Gordon 813).
The present work is documented in the Ernst Ludwig Kirchner Archive, Wichtrach/Bern.
The artist's estate (Davos 1938, Kunstmuseum Basel 1946). Kirchner community of heirs, Biberach (1954). Walter Köhler Collection, Munich (since 1954, heir to Walter Kirchner (1882-1954), brother of the artist). Since then in family ownership
Atmospheric landscape in good condition. Minimal mount staining, colors somewhat faded. The upper and left edges slightly irregular. Very isolated faint handling creases. A tiny hole in the lower right edge and a tiny split in the lower left edge.
