David Brownlow (American, 1915-2006) Stillness in the Desert Oil on Masonite 18 x 24 inches (45.7 x 61.0 cm) Signed lower left: David Brownlow PROVENANCE: Private collection, Denver, Colorado. David Brownlow, a self-taught painter, was a member of the Fort Worth Circle. His work is popular among Texas art collectors for his use of trowels and putty knives to create a thick impasto on the surfaces of his paintings. Architectural structures were the frequent subject of his abstract imagery. Brownlow had a talent for depicting buildings, like cathedrals and ancient ruins, which become sympathetic characters and ethereal reminders of ages past.
