Hiram Draper Williams (American, 1917-2003) Blue Expanse, 1963 Oil on canvas 52 x 60 inches (132.1 x 152.4 cm) Signed and dated lower right: H.D. Williams 63 PROVENANCE: Private collection, Denver, Colorado. Hiram Draper Williams trained at the Art Student's league in New York and after serving in World War II, graduated from the Pennsylvania State University. Williams became a professor at University of Texas Austin similar to Kelly Fearing and Seymour Fogel and was an integral part of the Modernist movement in Texas. In 1958, Williams became the first recipient of the University of Texas Research Grant. Both the Whitney Museum of American Art and the Museum of Modern Art in New York contain William's paintings in their permanent collections.
