Xavier González (American, 1898-1993) Harbor in Winter, Hidra, Norway Watercolor on paper 22 x 30 inches (55.9 x 76.2 cm) (sheet) Signed lower right: Xavier González PROVENANCE: Bonhams Skinner, Boston, Massachusetts, May 15, 2009, lot 434; Private collection, Austin, acquired from the above. Xavier González' work evolved and changed with the times. In the 1920s, he was painting in the impressionist tradition. With the 1930s, González became one of Texas' most accomplished regionalist painters and muralists completing four WPA post office murals and winning the international competition for the mural at the Los Angeles Museum of Art. In the 1940s, González' mural at the Los Angeles Museum of Art became identified with the American Modernist Movement. Floated and Framed under acrylic. Thin 1 inch horizontal crease (that is slightly folded over) along the extreme left edge. Deckle edges with a few minor spots of loss. Minor undulation to the sheet. Framed Dimensions 28.75 X 36.5 Inches
