Charles Taylor Bowling (American, 1891-1985) The Fairway Oil on canvas on board 12 x 15 inches (30.5 x 38.1 cm) Signed lower right: Chas T. Bowling Signed, titled, and inscribed on the reverse: "The Fairway" / Chas T. Bowling / Dallas, Tex. PROVENANCE: David Dike Fine Art, Dallas; Private collection, Dallas. A lithographer and painter, Charles Traylor Bowling was born at Quitman, Texas. He began painting in his mid-30's while recovering from an illness. Bowling studied with Alexandre Hogue, Frank Klepper, and Olin Travis at the Art Institute of Dallas, where he later taught. Eventually, this group would become known as the Dallas Nine, making Dallas one of the most dynamic centers of American Regionalism during the 1930s and 1940s. They turned away from the traditional subjects of Texas art. Instead of the portraits, grand historical events, impressionistic landscapes, and idealized genre scenes previous generations of Texas artists, they focused on the everyday people and places of Texas.
