Eselsschwanz

The artists' association Eselsschwanz, founded in 1912, resulted from the secession of some important members from the Russian avant-garde group Karo Bube. The artists not only revolted against the rules of art taught by the academies, but also strictly rejected the orientation towards Western art and pursued the goal of completely detaching themselves from influences from other countries. The name of the artists' group refers to an action at the Paris exhibition at the Salon des Indépendants in 1910, which presented three pictures painted with a brush tied to a donkey's tail.
