Appropriation Art

The term appropriation art refers to a specifically postmodern artistic practice that emerged in the late 1970s in the USA and is limited in art historical discourse to the 1980s. The art form deals with the appropriation of already existing works of art and makes the process of copying the central concept of its content. The artists use other people's pictures as models for their works, thus questioning originality and art historical expertise and also critically reflecting on the concept of art and art production.
