The Höri painters / the Höri artists

Since the beginning of the 20th century, the exceptionally beautiful landscape of Höri has attracted artists and writers to the peninsula in Lake Constance. From 1933 until the post-war period, important modern artists found refuge in this place, as the regime forbade them to work artistically in their home towns. This generation of painters active on the peninsula in the 1930s and 1940s is known in art history as the "Höri painters". The painters, all individualists of modernism, never saw themselves as an artists' colony, despite the artistic exchange.
