Viennese Actionism

In the 1960s, Viennese Actionism deliberately sought to confront social and artistic conventions as well as state and ecclesiastical authority through radical provocations and the challenging thematisation of social taboos. The Viennese Actionists broke all boundaries of the traditional conception of art, made the human body, among other things, into a medium of artistic expression through painting and even self-harm, and thus increasingly met with fierce resistance.
