Secession / Secession Art

In art history, the term Secession (Latin Secessio, "secession") refers to the break of a group of avant-garde artists with the traditional artists' associations of academic art in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. These secession movements usually originated from conflicts of interest in the general conception of art, as the academic tradition was no longer perceived as contemporary. In 1892, the first Secession was founded in Munich, followed by the Vienna Secession in 1897 and the Berlin Secession shortly afterwards.
