Düsseldorf School of Painting / Düsseldorfer Schule

In art history, the Düsseldorf School of Painting, founded by Wilhelm von Schadow (1788-1862), refers to a broad circle of more than 4,000 artists who taught or studied at the Royal Prussian Academy of Art in Düsseldorf (now the Düsseldorf State Academy of Art) from the 1820s to the 1860s. The school enjoyed international recognition and attracted many artists from the USA and all over Europe. The works of the Düsseldorf School, which in the beginning mainly comprised landscape paintings but were later expanded to include genre scenes, portraits and still lifes, have a romantic character and are particularly captivating because of their richness of detail, as well as powerful light accents.
