Fauvism

Fauvism refers to the style of a group of artists active between 1903-1907, which developed around the French artist Henri Matisse. Characteristic of the style are strong, intense colours, which were to be made to shine through the pure application of paint and the effect of contrast. The painters were derogatorily called "Fauves" (savages) by their contemporaries, which gave the style its name.
