Munich Secession

In 1892, a group of artists split from the traditional art movements of the Munich Artists' Cooperative and founded the Munich Secession. The association strove to open the Munich art scene to the innovative ideas of international modern art and to spread the new forms of expression. It advocated a renewal of the understanding of art, as well as the self-determination of the artist, and made it its primary goal to realize the ideal of artistic freedom. Through successful exhibitions that reached a wide audience, the Munich Secession became a model for other secession movements in Germany.
