Grupo Ruptura

The Brazilian artist group Ruptura ("rupture," "crack") was founded in São Paulo in the early 1950s. The participating artists were committed to geometric abstraction and pursued the common goal of breaking with the naturalistic approach to painting prevalent in Brazil. With the 1952 exhibition of the same name, "Ruptura," at the Museu de Arte Moderna de São Paulo, the group's artists marked the beginning of the concrete art movement in Brazil. As the name already announces, they wanted to break with the old, since according to their manifesto, the present no longer needed representationalism in art.
