Tonalism / Tonalismus
Tonalism is a tendency in North American painting in the period from 1880 to 1920. Characteristic of this style, applied primarily in landscape painting, are reduced, often dark colors and atmospheric light. Stylistic features such as soft brushstrokes and blurred contours make Tonalism related to Impressionism, which developed in the U.S. at about the same time, but striking differences lie in the reduced color palette and the increased subjective content of Tonalist works.
