Progressive Artists’ Group (PAG)

Founded in 1947, the year of India's independence, the short-lived Progressive Artists' Group sought to create a new form of Indian art and promote the committed Indian avant-garde. The group's artists did not pursue a particular style, but sought to combine traditional Indian art with the groundbreaking developments in modern art in Europe and America. The painters received support from some artists who had fled war-torn Europe, as they initially faced rejection in the Indian art establishment. The first exhibition took place in 1948. Shortly thereafter, the group disbanded and many members emigrated to Europe.
