Scottish Colourists

The term Scottish Colourists refers to the work of four Scottish painters who came into contact with avant-garde styles in Paris in the early 20th century and brought the intense colours of Fauvism with them to Britain. With their intense, free colours and spontaneous style, the Scottish colourists can be regarded as successors to the Glasgow Boys and were considered Scotland's first modern artists. The four painters exhibited together as "Les Peintres de L'Écosse Moderne" at the Galerie Barbazanges in Paris in 1924, but were not an official group of artists.
