The School of Nagybánya
The Nagybánya artists' colony originated in Munich, where many Hungarian painters received their training at the Munich Academy in the 1870s and 1880s. In the summer of 1886, a circle of artists led by Simon Hollósy travelled to Nagybánya, a town in eastern Hungary (now Baia Mare in Romania), to devote themselves to open-air painting. This summer residence for artists became a meeting place for the avant-garde and one of the most important artist colonies in Hungary, which was visited by numerous painters over several decades.
