Second School of Fontainebleau (1590 to 1620)

After the Wars of Religion brought things to a standstill, work was resumed in the royal workshops at Fontainebleau with the coronation of Henry IV in 1589. This second phase of the decorative decoration of the palace between 1590 and 1620 is known as the Second School of Fontainebleau. It was no longer predominantly Italian artists who were engaged, the leading artists being the Antwerp painter Ambroise Dubois and his two French colleagues Toussaint Dubreuil and Martin Fréminet.
