Ruth Orkin (American, 1921-1985) American Girl in Florence, Italy, 1951 Gelatin silver print, printed later 8-7/8 x 13-3/8 inches (22.5 x 34.0 cm) (image) 11 x 14 inches (sheet) Photographer's blindstamp, recto. Signed, titled, dated, in pencil, by Mary Engel, Orkin Estate Executor, in archive stamp, verso. This is another iconic image from 20th-century photography. When Ruth Orkin and her friend Ninalee Craig, were in Florence, they did a series of photographs on the streets, playing off the "macho" nature of the Italian man.
