LITERATURE: R. Frank, The Americans, Grove Press, New York, 1958, no. 13; Robert Frank, Aperture, Millerton, NY, 1961, p. 7; S. Greenough, Sarah & P. Brookman, Robert Frank: Moving Out, Scalo, Washington, D. C./National Gallery of Art, 1994, pp. 173 and 197; P. Galassi, Robert Frank: In America, Steidl Verlag, Göttingen, 2014, p. 132; S. Greenough, Looking In: Robert Frank's The Americans, Steidl Verlag, Göttingen/National Gallery of Art, Washington D.C., 2009, pp. xiii, 225, 463, 465, and contact no. 13. It was the first time I was in the South, and the first time I really saw segregation. I found it extraordinary that whites would give their children to black women when they wouldn't allow the women to sit by them in the drugstore. I did very few pictures that made a political point like this. ROBERT FRANK HID12401132022 © 2025 Heritage Auctions | All Rights Reserved www.HA.com/TexasAuctioneerLicenseNotice
Neutral toned print on semi-gloss, doubleweight paper with margins. Horizontal creases right across upper third of the image which have been flattened and minimized by a conservator, but are still visible in a raking light only. Otherwise, some minor paper losses (skinning) and unobtrusive staining at lower left corner (margins), not affecting the image. An oversized print of Frank's extraordinary image from The Americans, in good condition overall. Sold matted and framed. A full treatment report is available on request.
