Lot Details
Christopher Killip (British, 1946) Punks Dancing, Gateshead, Tyneside, 1986 Gelatin silver print, printed c. 1986. Signed in pencil, verso. image: 11 x 13-5/8 inches (27.9 x 34.7 cm) sheet: 15-3/8 x 19-1/4 inches PROVENANCE: Acquired directly from the artist. LITERATURE: G. Badger, Chris Killip, London, Phaidon 55, 2001, np. "This picture is about people who are rapt -- out of themselves. The fact that, in this case, their out-of-body experience might be chemically induced is neither here nor there. It could just be the music. On another level, this picture might be considered an allegory for our times. We crowd together yet have little time for each other. We have devised myriad ways of withdrawing into our own, individual worlds." (Badger, ibid.) HID12401132022 © 2024 Heritage Auctions | All Rights Reserved
Acquired directly from the artist.
Neutral toned print on semi-gloss, double-weight paper with margins. Tint retouched area in hair of principal punk, visible under close inspection only. Few small handling crimps in margins, and light wear to corners, not affecting the image. Killip's classic image, in very good condition. Loose print, sold unmatted and unframed.
