Lot Details
Christopher Killip (British, 1946) Rocker and a Toad, Seacoal Camp, Lynemouth, England, 1983 Gelatin silver print, printed December 29, 2007. Signed, titled and dated in pencil, verso. image: 16 x 20 inches (40.6 x 50.8 cm) sheet: 20 x 24 inches PROVENANCE: Acquired directly from the artist. LITERATURE: G. Badger, Chris Killip, London, Phaidon 55, 2001, np. "The critic Max Kozloff has remarked that 'nothing is more typical of so-called concerned photography than the brutality of compassion.' This truism is another way of saying that many 'concerned' photographers are sentimental and monosyllabic in tone. Killip will admit to more complex motives -- base curiosity for one. And he is not afraid to be gentle, as in this picture of young Rocker, avidly explaining the differences between a frog and a toad." (Badger, ibid.) HID12401132022 © 2024 Heritage Auctions | All Rights Reserved
Acquired directly from the artist.
Neutral toned print on semi-gloss, double-weight paper with margins. Two very unobtrusive, shallow linear indentations, lower margin, one into image (lower right), and one or two tiny specks of retouching in background, all visible under closest inspection only. A beautiful, oversized print of Killip's astonishing image, in very good condition. Loose print, sold unmatted and unframed.
