Smerdon Roe exhibited two works at the Royal Photographic Society, in 1891 The Sedge Gatherers in 1895 and A Fishing Cottage, both critically well-received and in a style strongly reminiscent of Roe's better-known compatriot Peter Henry Emerson, whose treatise, Naturalistic Photography for Students of the Art, published in 1889, was hugely influential on him.
