Jindrich Streit (Czech, 1946) Krizov, 1981 Gelatin silver print, printed c. 1981. Signed, titled and dated in pencil, verso. image: 10-3/4 x 14-5/8 inches (27.3 x 37.2 cm) sheet: 11-3/8 x 15-1/4 inches PROVENANCE: Acquired directly from the artist. Jindrich Štreit is best-known for his documentary photography which focuses on Czech rural life and its inhabitants. After a brief spell in prison in the early 1980s for his satirical images of then Czech President during a re-election campaign, Štreit was rediscovered by photo historian Anna Fárová who included some of his work in the influential 1981 exhibition 9 + 9, held at the Plasy Monastery, near Pilsen. Henri Cartier-Bresson visited this show, admired Štreit's work and subsequently persuaded the French newspaper Le Monde to publish some of his photographs. This is one of two wonderful images by this little-known photographer in this sale. HID12401132022 © 2024 Heritage Auctions | All Rights Reserved
