A Group of Three Russian Porcelain Bisque Commemorative Medallions Imperial Porcelain Factory, St. Petersburg, Period of Nicholas II (1894-1917), circa 1913 2-1/4 inches (5.7 cm) (each) PROVENANCE: Sotheby's New York, December 16, 1999; The Thomas Mansfield Collection of Imperial Russian Porcelain; John Atzbach Antiques, Bellevue, Washington; The Kathleen Durdin Collection of Russian Decorative Arts, Tampa, Florida. 1912 marked the centennial of the battle of Borodino, a turning point in the war against Napoleon. In honor of the occasion, sets of bisque medallions, featuring heroes of the period were created and offered as imperial gifts from 1912 throughout 1913, which was the tercentenary of Romanov rule. The offered lot contains images of Emperor Alexander I, General Kutuzov, and General Barclay de Tolly. The medallions are all signed "Timus" a known modeler at the factory at the beginning of the 20th century.
