A Russian Pictorial En Plein Enameled Silver Tea Glass Holder, Podstakannik Egor Samoshin, Grigorii Sbitnev, Moscow, 1908-1917 4-3/8 x 3-1/2 x 5 inches (11.1 x 8.9 x 12.7 cm) 290 grams PROVENANCE: John Atzbach Antiques, Bellevue, Washington; Acquired from the above by the present owner. Egor Tarasovich Samoshin is one of the lesser-known Moscow makers of the turn of the 20th century. A master of gold and silver work, he was elected in 1908 as a deputy from the manufacturers and craftsmen of Moscow to submit a petition for a reduction in the mandatory duties paid by silversmiths to governmental assayers. We do not know if his plea was successful, but we do know that he left a body of excellent small wares of very high quality. Works by Samoshin may be seen in the State Historical Museum, Moscow.
