A Russian En Plein Enameled Silver Pictorial Kovsh Kurlyukov, Moscow, 1908-1917 7 x 12-1/4 x 5-1/4 inches (17.8 x 31.1 x 13.3 cm) 1104 grams PROVENANCE: Christie's London, Russian Works of Art Including The Rothschild Fabergé Egg, November 28, 2007, lot 141; Acquired from the above by the present owner. The offered lot features an En plein enamel which may have been based on an image by Elizaveta Merkurievna Bem (Boehm). Bem was born in 1843 and grew up in St. Petersburg and on her family's rural estate at Shcheptsivo near Yaroslavl. She studied at the drawing academy of the Society for the Encouragement of Artists. A fruitful career began as an illustrator in the 1870's and continued until the first world war. Bem was famous throughout Russia for her lively and sentimental images of children in rural surroundings which had widespread influence in Russia as postcards. The Russian inscription within the cartouche translates as: "For Ina 20 January 1912". [Inotchke 20 Yanvar 1912].
