A Five-Piece Russian Cloisonné Enameled Gilt Silver Tea Set Kurlyukov, Feodor Rückert, Moscow, 1899-1908 6-3/8 x 8-1/4 x 4-1/2 inches (16.2 x 21.0 x 11.4 cm) (tallest, teapot) 1712 grams PROVENANCE: Christie's New York, The Greenfield Collection of Russian Enamels, October 20th, 1998, lot 216; Lyon & Turnbull London, The Chen Collection, November 23rd, 2008, lot 51; John Atzbach Antiques, Bellevue, Washington, acquired from the above; Acquired from the above by the present owner. The use of falconers or sokolniki as imagery in 19th century Russian enamels was a reflection of the rich cultural and historical traditions of Falconry, a romantic symbol of both nobility and leisure. This exceptional tea service, comprising teapot, covered sugar, creamer, strainer, and tongs, from Kurlyukov is singular as an example of Rückert's masterly treatment of the theme in his work.
