Victor Vasarely (1906-1997) Rend, conceived 1960, executed 1976 Acrylic on panel 19-3/8 x 19-3/8 inches (49.2 x 49.2 cm) Signed on the reverse: Vasarely Titled, dated, and inscribed by an unknown hand on the reverse: 2949 Vasarely / "Rend" / 1960/76 Property from a Distinguished California Collection PROVENANCE: The Vasarely Center, New York; D. Wigmore Fine Art, Inc., New York; Acquired by the present owner from the above, 2011. NOTE: The authenticity of the present work has been confirmed by Pierre Vasarely. The work will be included in the forthcoming Catalogue Raisonné de l'Oeuvre Peint de Victor Vasarely, which is currently being compiled by the Fondation Vasarely, Aix-en-Provence. Victor Vasarely, born on April 9, 1906, in Pécs, Hungary, is considered the "father" of Op Art. Initially studying medicine at Budapest University of Technology and Economics, he shifted to art and later moved to Paris in 1930 where he began exploring abstract geometric forms. Early in his career, he worked in graphic design and advertising, championing the democratization of art and its integration into everyday life. In the 1950s, Vasarely revolutionized art by incorporating optical illusions into his work. His geometric patterns created illusions of movement, depth, and three-dimensionality, laying the foundation for the Op Art movement, which gained popularity in the 1960s. Vasarely's legacy endures in contemporary art and design. He passed away on March 15, 1997, in Paris, leaving a lasting influence on how we perceive and engage with art. Presents very well. On stable panel support. A very few scattered pinpoints of accretion, likely errant paint. Mild surface dust. Otherwise, there appear to be no major condition issues affecting the work. Not examined out of frame. Framed Dimensions 19.5 X 19.5 Inches
