Edward Sheriff Curtis (American, 1868-1952) The Sentinel -- San Ildefonso (Plate 58, Vol. XVII, from "The North American Indian"), 1925 Large-format photogravure 15-1/2 x 11-5/8 inches (39.4 x 29.6 cm) (image) 22 x 18 inches (sheet) Credited, titled, and dated in letter press, lower margin recto. Published by Suffolk Engraving Company. LITERATURE: Edward S. Curtis: The North American Indian, the Complete Portfolios, Taschen, 1997, Vol. XVII, p. 648. "In prehistoric times, the Tewa were so beset by roving enemies that not a few of them, for purposes of defense, became cliff-dwellers. With a watchman posted in a niche of the cliff or on a commanding elevation, there was little chance of an enemy surprising laborers in the cornfields," (Edward S. In very good condition overall. Areas of minor soiling along top margin; a band of unobtrusive warming around image (caused by light strike), minor wear at edges/ corners, none affecting the image. Loose print cornered into a modern archival mat. Unframed.
