Lot Details
W. Eugene Smith (American, 1918-1978) Self Portrait (from The Loft from Inside In), circa 1958 Gelatin silver print 13 x 8-3/4 inches (33.0 x 22.2 cm) (image/sheet) Photographer's Estate/Lifetime print stamp, verso. LITERATURE: S. White, W. Eugene Smith: A Photographic Notebook, Stephen White Gallery, Los Angeles, 1988, p. 23. "It is difficult to separate the man, W. Eugene Smith, from his life's work. We can look at almost any of his photographs and make certain reasonable assumptions about the man. Perhaps the work reveals more than he, or we for that matter, might have wished. Looking at his photographs, we feel the weight of the world on his shoulders. The rage and pain, the emotions and sentiments expressed in the images can at times seem too emphatic for his own good -- or ours." (Stephen White, Introduction, A Photographic Notebook) HID12401132022 © 2024 Heritage Auctions | All Rights Reserved
In overall excellent condition. Slight cockling to the left margin not affect the image. Very light yellowing to the margins. Matted to 20 x 16 inches. Not framed.
