Utagawa Kunisada (Toyokuni III) (Japanese, 1786-1865) Waiting for the Fireworks to Start (Ima ni agari sō), from the series The Thirty-two Expressions in Contemporary Style (Imayō sanjūni sō), circa 1859 Woodblock print with gaufrage and shōmen-zuri details, embellished with silver mica 14-1/4 x 9-7/8 inches (36.2 x 25.1 cm) (sheet, ōban) Signed: Toyokuni (III) ga Published by Shōrin-do Property from the Nelkin Collection HID12401132022 © 2024 Heritage Auctions | All Rights Reserved
Print presents well with vibrant colors. Work is laid to a backing sheet. The condition of the work is consistent with its age. Mild toning throughout the sheet, inked colors still appear fresh. A few mild accretions primarily evident along left edge, on the figure's arms, and next to the artist's signature. A wormhole (1/2" x 1/2") in the figure's hairpiece, another small (1/8") wormhole in upper left quadrant; neither repaired; a pinhole in the lower right corner. Unframed.
