• The dynamic and energetic brushwork is rooted in the Berlin years during World War I.
• In the winter of 1915/16, E. L. Kirchner spent several weeks in Dr. Kohnstamm's clinic in Königstein im Taunus, returning in the spring of the same year to work on a commission for the design of the Brunnenhaus.
• The same year also saw the creation of the closely related paintings “Bahnhof in Königstein” (Gordon 469) and “Eisenbahn im Taunus” (Gordon 470, Pinakothek der Moderne, Munich).
