Al Hirschfeld (American, 1903-2003) On the Town, New York Times, 1971 Ink on paper 23-3/4 x 25-1/2 inches (60.3 x 64.8 cm) (sight) Signed and inscribed lower right: Hirschfeld Boston 3 The 1971 revival of On the Town, a classic Broadway musical with music by Leonard Bernstein and book and lyrics by Betty Comden and Adolph Green, starred an exciting cast that included Bernadette Peters, Phyllis Newman, Donna McKechnie, Jess Richards, Remak Ramsay, and Ron Husmann. Bernadette Peters, already a rising star, would recieve her first Tony nomination for this role. Ironically, the artist saw On the Town—a love letter to New York City—during its Boston preview, as noted in the inscription by the signature. The mysterious 3 reveals there are three hidden "NINAs" in the work. HID12401132022 © 2024 Heritage Auctions | All Rights Reserved
