Keith Haring (1958-1990) Untitled (Ludo), 1984 India ink on Mylar 19-1/2 x 26-1/4 inches (49.5 x 66.7 cm) (sheet) Signed, dated, and inscribed along lower edge: For Erika - Thanks (Merci) - Keith 1984 December 18 - Paris PROVENANCE: The artist; His printer, Erika Greenberg-Schneider, gift from the above, 1984. "In 1984, at the age of 28, I had been living in Paris full-time for three years. Being a female lithographer was uncommon in the City of Lights at that time, prompting me to establish my own freelance company. I worked independently with five different ateliers. One day, MM. François Benichou, a fine art print publisher, contacted me with a mysterious request: to print for an American artist without disclosing their identity, fearing potential theft by another publisher. He suggested renting an atelier at night to maintain secrecy. Fortunately, I had access to the perfect atelier on the Faubourg, away from the bustling art centers, housed in a studio over a century old. The owner had taught me the French version of lithography—a less scientific, more culinary approach—and, most importantly, trusted me implicitly. Thirty minutes before commencing work on the portfolio titled Ludo, I met the artist: Keith Haring. He arrived with a group of friends, including his lover Ludovic, a dancer with the Paris Opera Ballet and the inspiration behind the portfolio's title. Among the original ink drawings on mylar created by Keith for the portfolio, this particular piece was submitted by the artist but then not chosen for inclusion in the edition. Instead, Keith signed it and gifted it to me. Working with Keith Haring was an honor; he was truly a visionary." - Erika Greenberg-Schneider, August 2024 HID12401132022 © 2024 Heritage Auctions | All Rights Reserved www.HA.com/TexasAuctioneerLicenseNotice
Presents very well. Some scattered instances of craquelure and minor flaking to the ink layer, particularly at areas of thickest application. A very few faint pinpoint dots of yellowish discoloration in lower margin. Sheet is offered unmounted and unframed.
