Alberto Vargas (Peruvian/American, 1896-1982) Getting lots of Gifts, Varga Girl calendar, December 1948 Watercolor on board with paper overlay 28-1/4 x 19-1/4 inches (71.8 x 48.9 cm) (sight) Signed lower left Inscribed to lower left: To "Mitch" my friend with sincere appreciation Alberto Property from the Louis and Susan Meisel Collection Though Alberto Vargas is best known for his association with Esquire magazine, the partnership ended on very acrimonious terms. Shortly after leaving Esquire, the artist released his own "Varga Girl" calendar through Varga Enterprises publishing company. However, within a few months of its release, Esquire had distribution halted, citing copyright infringement. This is a unique example from one of the significant turning points in Vargas's long career. When published, the calendar appeared with the caption: "December snows are on the ground, the wolves are getting bolder; I'm glad I'm getting lots of gifts, 'Cause I'm also getting older."
