In 1870, a group of Russian realist painters formed the "Cooperative for Travelling Exhibitions" in Saint Petersburg in protest against the academic restrictions. The artists pursued the common goal of making the socially critical art of Russian realism accessible to a broad public within the framework of the cooperative by means of jointly organised travelling exhibitions.
