Gutai

After the Second World War, the avant-garde artist group Gutai sought new forms of expression and creation processes for painting in Japan. The experimental artists did not create in the conventional sense, but placed the creative process itself and bodily action in the foreground. Through their radical ideas and approaches to the production of art, the Gutai group took on a pioneering role for the later performance and conceptual art of the 1960s and 1970s.
