Sema

The artists' group Sema (Greek sema "sign"), founded in Munich in 1911, not only united visual artists, but also had representatives from the genres of literature, architecture and music. According to its own statements, the Sema group differed from other existing artists' associations because its founding did not happen for social or economic motives, but was based on a common mindset and a shared artistic worldview. Despite its short existence until 1913, the group occupies a pioneering position as one of the earliest expositions of the Expressionist conception of art and the demand for spirituality in art.
