Pattern and Decoration / Pattern Painting

The movement, which is particularly widespread in the USA and is usually referred to as "Pattern and Decoration" or "Pattern Painting", reached its peak in the late 1970s. The art style, which emerged as a reaction to the rational austerity of Minimal Art, focuses on the ornament as a basic motif and, through a variety of colours and forms, creates colourful compositions that make reference to different ornamental traditions, such as Oriental décor and Asian or North and South American folk art.
