Art Brut

The term Art Brut (French for "raw art"), coined by the French painter Jean Dubuffet, does not denote a uniform style, but is an umbrella term for works of art created outside the established, academic art system. Dubuffet considered this raw state of artistic expression, i.e. spontaneous, unreflective works by untrained painters, including the art of the mentally ill, the mentally impaired, social outsiders such as prison inmates and children, to be unadulterated, truthful art.
