German expressionism

Expressionism is a very multi-layered art movement of the early 20th century, which had a significant influence on the art scene in Germany for more than two decades. The beginning and end of the Expressionist movement in Germany roughly mark the founding year of the Dresden artists' community Die Brücke in 1905 and the subsiding of the revolutionary unrest of the post-war period around 1920. A thoroughly subjective art movement full of artistic contrasts and without a uniform style developed from a feeling of insecurity in a time of deep longing for spiritual renewal. In addition to the two main groups of German Expressionism (Die Brücke and Der Blaue Reiter), there were other centers of the German art revolution on the Rhine, in northern Germany, and in Westphalia.
