Berlin Secession

The Secession movement in Berlin emerged in 1898 as an artistic revolution against Wilhelmine exhibition policies. A group of 65 artists positioned themselves as avant-garde and founded an association to create their own opportunities to present works independent of the classical art establishment. The Berlin Secession opposed the academic traditions of art and, through its progressive orientation, paved the way for international modern movements such as Impressionism, Symbolism and Art Nouveau.
