Wiener Secession

The founding of the Vienna Secession on April 3, 1897, can be traced back to a considerable conflict of interests within the Viennese art scene. Under the leadership of the painter Gustav Klimt (1862-1918), a group of visual artists split off from the Vienna Künstlerhaus because they turned away from the traditional concept of art and turned their backs on established art oriented toward historicism. With the motto "Der Zeit ihre Kunst. Der Kunst ihre Freiheit" the new association of visual artists presented a progressive understanding of art to the population, became a pioneer for modernism and successfully rebelled against the oppressive influence of a conservative art world.
