Market Photo Workshop

The Market Photo Workshop, a South African school of photography, was founded in 1989 by documentary photographer David Goldblatt (1930-2018) to support black photographers under apartheid and provide them with access to workshops and education, as well as to international photographers. Since its inception, the Market Photo Workshop has reflected South African political struggles and socio-cultural changes through photography. The institution is based in Newtown, Johannesburg, where it operates a project space, gallery and resource centre. In the meantime, the Market Photo Workshop has established itself as an important training institution for South African photographers, which, after initially concentrating on social documentary photography, has now expanded its remit to include all aspects of photography.
