Founded in 1949, the fotoform group is considered the most important German photographers' association of the post-war period. In the 1950s, three exhibitions took place under the programmatic label "Subjective Photography", which gave the group a prominent position in European artistic photography. The photographic artists took up the avant-garde photography of the 1920s and 1930s and at the same time tried to break new ground aesthetically. They shared an interest in abstract and experimental photography and wanted to exploit the creative possibilities of photography holistically.
