Relational aesthetics is a term coined by the French curator Nicolas Bourriaud (*1965), which emerged from his attempt to analyze and categorize the new trends in art from the 1990s. He applies the term relational aesthetics to artistic works that address relationships between art and other areas of human activity, and art that is based on human relationships or inspired by their social context. He saw artists as mediators and considered artworks as exchanges of information between the artist and the viewer.
