Washington Color School

The Washington Color School was an art movement that emerged in Washington DC in the late 1950s and flourished in the 1960s, dedicated to a form of abstract art that evolved from color field painting. The Washington Color School moved away from the gestural and subjective approaches of New York School abstract expressionism to focus on the optical properties of color. The group's name derived from the 1965 exhibition "The Washington Color Painters" at the Washington Gallery of Modern Art.
